Ser y Durar [To Be and To Last] by the Spanish duo Democracia, is an amazing and electrifying piece at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn, full of edited cuts and fast-moving dancers. It is powerful because it brings this cemetery to life- a cemetery set up for those in Madrid who were not allowed to be buried in the Catholic cemetery for any number of subversive reasons. That means that it is really a cemetery for me (and probably for you). So this piece is for you too. It is hard not to watch the whole thing and want to dance around this room…
